WHAT TO EXPECT

How Tree Planting Works

Tree planting is different from shrub installation - the steps and the stakes are higher. Here is what you will see from site assessment through final walkthrough.

Homeowner evaluating where to plant a shade tree in a residential yard
01

Site Assessment & Species Confirmation

We confirm the planting location, overhead clearance, and soil conditions before delivery is scheduled. A tree planted in the wrong spot relative to utilities, structures, or drainage does not become the right tree with time.

02

Tree Delivery & Staging

Balled-and-burlapped and container trees arrive on installation day. We position each tree before digging - once the hole is dug, placement adjustments risk damaging the root ball.

03

Hole Excavation & Root Ball Placement

Holes are dug wide but not too deep - the root flare needs to sit at or slightly above grade, not buried. Kentucky clay holds water and slows drainage, so depth matters here.

04

Backfill, Staking & Mulch Ring

The hole is backfilled with the excavated soil, staked if the tree needs support, and finished with a mulch ring. Mulch does not touch the trunk - volcano mulching is a common mistake we avoid.

05

Walkthrough & Establishment Guidance

We walk the finished tree with you and explain what establishment watering looks like for your specific tree and soil. A tree that fails in year one almost always failed because of inadequate water in the first 90 days.

TESTIMONIALS

What Homeowners Notice After Planting Work Is Finished

Tree planting depends on clear communication, careful placement, and follow-through after the install.

We have used Orlando's Landscaping for our landscaping and lawn mowing and trim for several years. They are the best and very easy to work with. They have removed trees and planted trees and several bushes. Every recommendation has been great. Orlando has a talent for how the mulch beds should look and where new plants should be placed. We receive comments on well our yard looks and have referred them to several of our neighbors.

Landscaping, mowing, trees, and planting

Orlando and his team of helpers have been fabulous for our regular maintenance as well as all sorts of other things for us. Everything from cleaning out our gutters to replacing plants in our borders to planting trees to cleaning out fence rows to power washing a driveway to trimming hedges to installing a new border in front of a renovated house. Orlando has always been excellent to work with. Orlando and his team also maintain the six landscaped islands in our HOA. He is willing to help us with any of our landscaping projects.

Maintenance, planting, trimming, and HOA landscaping

Orlando has been doing work for us for over 21 years including on our farm (13) and our “in town” house (8) not only mowing and weed eating fence lines, but landscaping. My wife did all the yard mowing around the house (on the farm) and I did most of the landscaping mulch until it got to be too much (5 acres); Orlando did all our road frontage mowing and weed eating as well as cleaning out fence rows as needed. Eventually he and his men took over all the farm landscaping work, including what we had been doing; he also took out several large trees as needed. At our new house in town, while my wife and I did all the landscaping the first few years, recently, due to age, we now have Orlando perform all that is needed… except mowing and weed eating as we have NO GRASS— only trees, shrubs, walkways…. I might add, due to some severe winters, Orlando has replaced several shrubs… Of course in the fall, Orlando gets rid of all the fall leaves and re-mulches our yard. Orlando does a great job and appreciates the work everyone gives him. We know too, that over the years, with his excellent reputation, we have to call him ahead of when we need him so he can plan accordingly… Bottom line - Orlando does great work at a reasonable price and appreciates the work… and cleans up afterwards

SERVICE OVERVIEW

Tree Planting Quick Answers

How to think about this service

Tree planting is the professional installation path for trees that can weigh hundreds of pounds and need equipment to move, place, and install correctly. It is different from bed-level shrub and perennial planting.

What this page doesn't cover

This page does not own shrub-only or foundation bed planting, evergreen privacy rows as a standalone scope, tree removal, arborist work, or stump grinding. Those should move to planting installation, privacy tree installation, or stump grinding depending on the real scope.

Do I need to be home when my tree is planted?

No. It is your choice, and many tree planting projects are completed while the homeowner is away after the plan is confirmed.

What if I am not sure what tree to buy or where to plant it?

We can help by phone, by reviewing emailed photos, or by making a site visit when the location or species decision needs more context.

How deep should a tree be planted?

The root flare should sit at or slightly above grade, not buried. We dig wide enough for the root ball and avoid planting too deep, especially in Kentucky clay where poor depth can trap water around the roots.

How should I water newly planted trees?

For the 1-year plant warranty, Warranty applies with proper watering - twice daily, morning and evening. Watering outside peak sun prevents scorch, and we explain the care plan after installation.

How often should I water a newly planted tree?

Water a newly planted tree twice daily, morning and evening. Water outside peak sun to prevent scorch. This proper watering protocol is what qualifies the install for the 1-year plant warranty.

Can you move an existing tree or shrub?

Transplanting is not a standalone service we offer. If we are already on-site for a planting or landscape job and you would like a small tree or shrub moved, we can usually handle it as part of that work. Larger or specimen trees, or a move on its own, fall outside what we take on.
